A proper introduction must be made for Modmotif’s “Unknown Artist” series. As the moniker suggests, the music is in the same vein: anonymous, cloaked in mystery, and a bit frayed and tattered. This EP allows an opportunity for listeners to follow suit and
detach themselves from outside in uences to explore an internal space through frequented rhythms and a noble simplicity. The
rst track “Untitled 0001A” displays all the essential elements
for the return of sleek and sexy minimalist attire. The clean lines
of the rhythmic pattern loop hypnotically, allowing for the sheer, almost transparent, synth elements to pop. In contrast, the form tting bass line is the dominant stripe that will be on full display on any dance oor. The second creation from this series is a pared-back techno essential. With a dreamy synth back drop and a velvety bass line, the atmosphere created is simple but romantic. Three remixes are gifted in this series. The rst for “0001A” is provided by label co-founder Bertrand P. His classic dub techno style provides a bold, low cut sub bass reminiscent of the reggae genre. Highlighting this track is a resonating percussive sound design accented with sharp, metallic hits and glittering hi-hats which provides the hard edge of the techno genre. The Mon.To remix of “0001B” is more aggressive and provocative. One will notice the whip-like snare intricately adorned with seductive, saw-toothed synths and reversed, leathery tones. If you’re looking for a deep, trendy number then this one has the groove for you. Ansidis rounds out the remixers with a relaxed, layered remake of “0001B.” Expect a bit of 80’s nostalgia with the coolly plucked bass line, jazzy saxophone ri , and colorful, vintage sounding synths. A new venture for Modmotif is artfully delivered in this package. Sometimes discovering the “unknown” brings more pleasure than expected.
